If you are looking to quit smoking, then there are many ways you can achieve your goal. However, one of the ways that has grown in popularity over the last couple of years is vaping with people weighing up vaping over smoking benefits. Vaping is on the rise in New Zealand with one in six trying vaping in 2016. This may continue to grow now that electronic cigarettes are legal for those over 18. Even with this growth, there are concerns about the health implications of vaping.

How Does Vaping Work?

Vaping uses e-liquid which is then vaporised and inhaled. The ingredients of e-liquid are usually propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, and flavouring. Some e-liquids also contain nicotine, which is one reason people believe they can use them to quit smoking.

Can Vaping Lead to Smoking?

There is no evidence that vaping leads to smoking. Most people who vape are those who are current or ex-smokers who want to eventually stop smoking. As opposed to the growing popularity of vaping,  smoking rates in New Zealand are consistently declining year by year, with approximately 8% of adults in Aotearoa identified as current smokers in 2022/23, according to Smoke Free.

Are Vapes Good For Quitting Smoking?

There are many different ways that you can quit smoking. Vaping is used as one of those tools but can be used with others to help quit for good. When comparing vaping to other smoking replacements such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), there isn’t much evidence to support it.

Limited research has shown that vaping products are just as good as nicotine patches in helping smokers quit. However, more research is needed to back up this research.
